Psychiatric Evaluations & Medication Management in Central Pennsylvania

When emotional or behavioral symptoms begin affecting daily life, professional psychiatric care can provide clarity, stability, and relief.

Laurel Life offers comprehensive psychiatry services across six locations in Central Pennsylvania.

Our Board-Certified Psychiatrist and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners provide psychiatric evaluations and medication management for children, adolescents, and adults in a safe, trauma-informed environment.

Our nurse practitioners are Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs), meaning they have advanced training specifically in diagnosing mental health conditions and providing psychiatric medication management. They work closely with our psychiatrist to ensure individuals receive thoughtful, evidence-based care tailored to their needs.

If you are looking for a psychiatrist near you, we are here to help.

What Is Psychiatry?

Psychiatry focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and medication management of mental health conditions. While therapy addresses emotional growth and skill-building, psychiatry evaluates whether medication may support symptom stabilization and long-term wellness.

Our psychiatric providers assess:

  • Mood disorders

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Trauma-related conditions

  • ADHD and attention concerns

  • Behavioral challenges

  • Significant emotional changes

  • Persistent sadness or irritability

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Other mental health symptoms affecting home, school, or work life

If symptoms have lasted more than two weeks or are impacting functioning, it may be time to consider a psychiatric evaluation.

What to Expect From Psychiatry Services

Starting psychiatric care can feel overwhelming. We aim to make the process clear and supportive.

1. Diagnostic Assessment (Intake Appointment)

All new clients begin with a required intake appointment. During this 60-minute session, a Mental Health Professional gathers clinical history, background information, and presenting concerns. This information helps guide the psychiatric provider’s recommendations.

Approximate Length: 60 minutes

2. Psychiatric Evaluation With a Prescriber

This comprehensive evaluation allows the provider to review symptoms, confirm diagnoses, and discuss treatment options, including medication if appropriate.

Approximate Length: Up to 60 minutes

3. Medication Management Appointments (Med-Checks)

Follow-up appointments focus on monitoring medication response, side effects, and symptom changes.

Approximate Length: 15 minutes

If additional concerns arise, a separate appointment may be scheduled to ensure adequate time for discussion.

4. Treatment Plan Updates

Every five to six months, clients meet with a Mental Health Professional [JPMLN5] to review and update treatment goals. This ensures services remain active and aligned with current needs.

A Trauma-Informed Approach to Psychiatric Care

At Laurel Life, all psychiatry services are grounded in trauma-informed principles.

We understand that behavior and symptoms often reflect lived experiences. Our providers:

  • Listen carefully to each individual’s story

  • Partner with families when appropriate

  • Emphasize collaboration in treatment decisions

  • Focus on long-term stability and resilience

Medication is never the only solution. It is one tool that may support overall wellness when clinically appropriate.
